Brussels, December 4, 2023# rbj – Romanian Dana Spinanț, Ursula von der Leyen Commission Deputy Spokesperson and Director for Political Communication in the European Commission, has been appointed as Director General of the Directorate General for Communication of the European Commission, becoming the first Romanian citizen to head a General Directorate of the European Commission.

The announcement was made by the social network X by Balazs Ujvari, spokesperson of the European Commission for budget and human resources, humanitarian aid and crisis management.

Romanian Dana Spinanț, Ursula von der Leyen’s deputy spokesperson for the Commission and director for political communication in the European Commission, has been appointed as director general of the Directorate General for Communication of the European Commission, becoming the first Romanian citizen to head a Directorate General of the European Commission.

The announcement was made by the social network X by Balazs Ujvari, spokesperson of the European Commission for budget and human resources, humanitarian aid and crisis management.

In September 2019, Dana Spinanț was appointed as deputy spokesperson of the Commission headed by Ursula von der Leyen, and in November of the same year she took over the position of director for political communication within the General Directorate for Communication of the executive from Brussels.

Dana Spinanț joined the Commission in 2009, after a long career in the mass media. She held positions of progressive responsibility within the General Directorate of Justice and Consumers, the General Directorate of Migration and Internal Affairs, the General Directorate of Regional and Urban Policy and the General Directorate of Communication, where she previously held the position of director for political communication, and currently holds the position of interim general manager. Dana Spinanț also held the position of Deputy Chief Spokesperson of the Commission from December 2019 to October 2023.

Before joining the European Commission, Dana Spinant worked for 15 years as a journalist at publications such as EUobserver.com (2001-2002) and European Voice (2002-2009), as well as news director and Brussels correspondent for several Romanian television stations.
