Bucharest, July 27, 2024 – RBJ – The Minister of Culture from Bucharest announced that, today, two files of Romania have received acceptance to be included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. It is about the monumental Ensemble “Calea Eroilor” made by Constantin Brâncuşi in Târgu Jiu, in Romania, and “Frontierele Imperiului Roman – Dacia / Frontiers of the Roman Empire – Dacia” which were favorably approved during the 46th session of the World Heritage Committee that took place in India, in New Delhi.
The Ministry of Culture added that the inscription of the “Monumental Ensemble “Calea Eroilor” made by Constantin Brâncuşi in Târgu Jiu” in the UNESCO World Heritage List means the recognition of these works made by the great Romanian artist in his homeland.
“The treasure that Constantin Brâncuşi left to the Romanians at Târgu Jiu officially becomes a cultural asset of humanity. The exceptional universal value of this cultural site, worthy of international admiration and protection, is thus confirmed. The recognition received today obliges us to protect the “Path of Heroes” Monumental Ensemble, to keep it intact for future generations and for the cultural memory of humanity. It is a commitment that our country takes at the national level, but also at the local level, in the city where the monumental complex was created”, said the Romanian Minister of Culture.
The monumental ensemble in Târgu-Jiu includes the works made by the sculptor Constantin Brâncuşi in the period 1937-1938 and was meant to glorify “the memory of the Gorje heroes who sacrificed themselves in the war of integration”. Brâncuşi’s masterpiece is the last achievement in a series of commemorative works, intended for the heroes of the city of Târgu-Jiu: the placement of a commemorative plaque on the bridge over the Jiu; the creation of a monument dedicated to the heroine Ecaterina Teodoroiu, located in the center of the city; the construction of a church “in memory of the heroes”, on the site of an older one, dedicated to the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul (built between 1927 and 1937); a monument project (unfinished) placed in front of the artillery regiment.
Brâncuşi’s sculptural ensemble is located in the Central Park in the city of Târgu Jiu and includes several components that stretch over a distance of almost 1.5 kilometers. The four sculptural components — the Table of Silence, the Alley of Chairs, the Kissing Gate and the Endless Column — are arranged on the same axis, oriented from west to east, with a length of 1,275 m.
Brâncuşi’s creation was made between 1937 and 1938 and was born at the request of the National League of Gorj Women (from Gorj county).
