Bucharest, January 4, 2024 – # rbj – This year, Romania is allocating more than 2% of GDP to endow the army. Almost all the equipment and weapons are purchased from major producing countries of NATO.
Today, according to a press release, the Ministry of National Defense welcomes the signing by the NATO Support and Procurement Agency (NSPA) of the joint purchase contract of up to 1,000 PAC-2 GEM-T missiles for the PATRIOT surface-to-air missile systems in the equipment of Germany, the Netherlands, Romania and Spain.
In this regard, NSPA awarded a contract to the COMLOG/Germany Company, for the manufacture of missiles in Europe, which will be approved by an FMS (Foreign Military Sales) type LOA (Letter of Offer and Acceptance) agreement by the Government of the United States of America.
Within this consolidated multinational purchase, which uses the principles of the European Air Defense Initiative ESSI (European Sky Shield Initiative), Romania will acquire a number of 200 PAC-2 GEM-T missiles. The Ministry of National Defense requested and obtained the approval of the Romanian Parliament to participate in this joint procurement program, the estimated total cost for the entire package of 200 missiles intended to complete the combat stocks of our army being EUR 1.09 billion, without VAT, in which includes spare parts, related services and FMS costs.
“This acquisition demonstrates that the Alliance has adequate and adapted solutions to the security situation we are facing in Eastern Europe with the outbreak of Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine. I consider this project to be a success, a model of cooperation between allies, and an example of the development of production capacities for defense that deserves to be replicated at the European level”, said the Minister of National Defense, Angel Tîlvăr.
Also, Minister Tîlvăr showed that in order to fulfill the objectives of Romania’s defense policy, the Ministry of National Defense will continue the steps for the acquisition of military equipment and last-generation ammunition.
“The ongoing or preparation endowment programs will contribute to the development and maintenance by the Romanian Army of robust and resilient, credible, interoperable, flexible and efficient defense capabilities. Romania consistently fulfills its commitments as a result of being a NATO and EU member state and contributes to the implementation of effective measures to deter any aggression towards the Euro-Atlantic space and to articulate an adequate response to the current and future challenges of the security environment”, he noted Angel Tilvar.
