Bucharest, April 13, 2025 – RBJ – Today the opening ceremony of the World Expo hosted by the Japanese city of Osaka took place.
The event was attended by the emperor and prime minister of Japan, as well as representatives of the over 160 countries and organizations participating in the World Expo.
The exhibition aims to present the latest technical and technological achievements, from flying cars to a functional heart made of stem cells.
Expo Osaka has as its theme “Designing Future Society for Our Lives” and will take place between April 13 and October 13, 2025. The three secondary themes of the exhibition “Saving Lives”, “Empowering Lives” and “Connecting Lives” emphasize the contribution of states to achieving the sustainable development goals, as formulated by the UN.
The World Expo is taking place on Yumeshima Island, an artificial island built on the seashore in the city of Osaka, one of the two major administrative centers of the Kansai region, along with Kyoto.
The event will take place from April 13 to October 13, 2025.
Romania’s participation with a national pavilion at Expo Osaka 2025 was approved by the Prime Minister and the President of Romania by Memorandum in April 2021. The Romanian participation was agreed with a self-built pavilion called “The Romanian Magic Box”. The architectural concept was selected following the competition organized by the “Ion Mincu” University of Architecture and Urbanism in Bucharest, in partnership with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in which students from the Faculty of Architecture participated. Through this, our country wants to propose “a country of the future that combines tradition and equality to contribute to the development of a sustainable and prosperous society. Natural resources, cultural creativity and technological innovation are just some of the resources with which Romania responds to the sub-theme Saving Lives, offering solutions for a better world.
At Expo Osaka 2025, Romania will focus on several economic sectors such as the energy industry, IT&C, food, wine and beer industries. Several companies from each sector were chosen to participate in the exhibition in the Romanian pavilion.
Romania’s mascot at the Osaka World Expo is a… pelican named Haru, which means “spring” in Japanese.
Opening the event, Secretary of State Janina Sitaru emphasized the relevance of the theme of the world exhibition – “Creating Future Society for Our Lives” – strongly anchored in the current international context, given the importance of global collaboration and collective involvement, emphasizing that a better future for future generations can only be ensured through honest and continuous cooperation.
Romania Day at Expo 2025 Osaka, scheduled to take place on June 26, will be marked by the organization of a Multisectoral Economic Forum attended by over 80 companies from the country, relevant representatives of the Japanese business community, as well as high-ranking officials of the two states. The forum will feature country and investment project presentations, as well as B2B sessions dedicated to participants.
The artistic moment of the opening of the Romanian Pavilion was supported by students from the National University of Music in Bucharest, who are present at the Romanian Pavilion between April 13 and May 11.
