One of the most dramatic problems in Hungary is the steady decline in population over the last 40-50 years. This has not only economic but also political implications.
Hungary is a typical example of how a nation can perish from causes that concern exclusively the slowdown of internal engines. In Hungary, these engines have an excessively low fertility rate. A Hungarian woman produces only 1.11 children, compared to the average of 2.10 children so that the population of a country can regenerate. In Hungary, this goal is difficult to achieve both due to the decrease in the number of young women, especially due to aging, and the external migration of Hungarians as an active population.
On the other hand, Budapest’s revenge policy towards Romania and other neighboring states did not bear fruit. The decisions of Viktor Orban, PM of Hungary, to integrate in the Hungarian nation the Hungarian populations from Romania, Ukraine, the former Yugoslavia, Slovakia, and to “multiply”, thus, the number of the Hungarian population did not prove to have the expected effects. Hungarians in neighboring countries did not flock to the Pannonian Plain, nor did they adhere to the government’s anti-Trianon plans in Budapest.
Under these conditions, “Imperial Hungary” remains a dream of Horthyste generations. A country that you cross by car in half an hour from north to south and in three-quarters of an hour from east to west.
As a population, Hungary no longer means anything on the world map, it is close to the 100th place in the world in terms of population.
The population of Hungary is 9,629,622 as of Sunday, October 3, 2021, based on Worldometer calculations of the latest United Nations data.
The population of Hungary in 2020 is estimated at 9,660,351 people in the middle of the year, according to UN data. The population of Hungary is equivalent to 0.12% of the total world population.
The current population of Hungary is smaller than in 1955, when it was 9,828,494 inhabitants. According to forecasts (www.Worldometers.info) in 2050, the population of Hungary will be 8.4 million people. If we subtract from this total population the number of the Roma population (about 700-800 thousand) and of the Hungarians outside the country’s borders (about 2 million people) we can say that Hungary will have a little over 5 million inhabitants over 20-30 years.
This is the reality and it cannot be avoided even by nationalist PM Viktor Orban.
The recent Demographic Forum, which took place in Budapest and was attended by sociologists and demographers from several countries, did not extrapolate to any situation other than the current one: little Hungary is getting smaller.
