Bucharest, May 23 2024 RBJ – At Dev.Play, the conference dedicated to Romanian and Eastern European video game developers, two key creative people for one of the most recognized video games in recent years will be present for the first time in Romania: Borislav Slavov, composer and music director for Baldur’s Gate 3 and Sebastian Kalemba, game director of The Witcher saga. The 2024 edition of Dev.Play will take place in the Aula Magna of the Politehnica University of Bucharest on 3th and 4th of June. The event brings more than 20 leading names in the local and international industry in front of Romanian game developers, investors, publishers and professionals.

Borislav Slavov is an award-winning composer and music director, best known for his scores for the games Divinity: Original Sin 2, Baldur’s Gate 3 and Crysis 2, where he worked as lead composer alongside the acclaimed Hans Zimmer.

Sebastian Kalemba started working during the production of Witcher 3: Wild Hunt as lead animator, and in time was promoted to Head of Animation and Animation Director for Cyberpunk 2077. Hundreds of hours spent directing actors and sequences in the game and coordinating all departments prepared Sebastian to take on the role of game director for the new Witcher saga.

Talks by Borislav Slavov on the future of music in video games and by Sebastian Kalemba on the importance of vision in a production team are taking place on the first day of the conference, June 3th at 15:30 and 16:30.

A special guest of the event is Fawzi Mesmar, VP Global Creative at Ubisoft. Fawzi is a game designer and in this capacity has worked on over 20 titles enjoyed by millions of gamers worldwide, including games from the Mario Rabbids, Battlefield and Star Wars franchises. Fawzi Mesmar will talk about how to create memorable moments in games Tuesday June 4th, at 14:30.

“Dev.Play returns to a new stage with a great line-up. We are honoured to have as guests specialists who have contributed to some of the best games in the history of the industry and we believe their presentations will inspire developers in the local industry,” said Cătălin Butnariu, Dev.Play founder and RGDA president.
The Indie Expo area will feature games from Romania and Eastern Europe, some of which can be played for the first time at Dev.Play. Another opportunity for indie developers is the Dev.Play Indie Festival, an online event held in parallel with the conference, where studios from Hungary, Estonia, Montenegro, Ukraine, Serbia, Poland, Bulgaria and Romania will showcase their titles in an online stream, and their games will be available on Steam with exclusive discounts. Indie Expo and Indie Festival have been successful elements of the conference at every edition, and games that have been showcased for the first time at Dev.Play have gone on to win awards at renowned international indie competitions or secure investment and publishing deals.

Moreover, within Dev.Play, students and aspiring developers will be able to attend two introductory workshops in the video game development industry. The workshop “Getting Started In The Game Dev Industry (In Romania)” is aimed at students who are interested in joining the game development industry. Local industry veterans Alexandru Pădure and Cătălin Butnariu will review the process of developing a video game and the different roles that contribute to the creation of a game, as well as the different employment and entrepreneurship opportunities that are available in the local industry in Romania. In the workshop “Anatomy Of A Mobile Game (From An Engineering Perspective)”, Marius Gherman from Amber Studio will talk about the building blocks of a mobile game and common practices for creating such products. The full workshop programme can be discovered here. Students wishing to attend the workshops will benefit from an affordable price for the whole event.

On the first day of Dev.Play, women working in the industry are invited to attend the Women in Games Lunch. The event is dedicated to female specialists with technical roles in studios and aims to discuss and debate common myths and new perspectives on the role of women in a still male-dominated industry. The event will be moderated by Agnes Corlătescu, Technical Product Owner and Cristina Hodea, HR Lead at Playtika.
