Bucharest, September 1, 2025 – RBJ – Romania will record in 2025, according to the Ministry of Agriculture estimates, the largest wheat harvest in the last three decades. According to the calculations of farmers’ associations, production will be 13.3 and 14 million tons, a record level in the last 28 years. This would represent an increase of approximately 40% compared to the previous agricultural year, when drought hit national production hard.
The remarkable performance in 2025 could propel Romania to the top of European grain producers, alongside traditional leaders France and Germany, and even surpassing them in terms of growth rate and quality.
In addition to wheat, the estimates are encouraging for other crops as well. The European Commission forecasts a corn production of over 10 million tons for Romania in 2025, a significant increase compared to the 6 million tons the previous year. For sunflower, the production is estimated at 2.22 million tons, maintaining Romania in the European leader position.
The cereal market in Romania is marked by price volatility. Bread wheat is traded between 857 and 1,017 lei/ton, depending on the area. Corn varies between 800 and 1,057 lei/ton, and sunflower – between 1,855 and 2,577 lei/ton.
Globally, cereal production is estimated to reach a record level of 2.925 billion tons in 2025, an increase of 2.3% compared to the previous year. Global wheat production is forecast at 805.3 million tonnes, and corn at 1.564 billion tonnes.
According to the analysis of the Romanian Farmers Association, in the long term, the global area cultivated with cereals will grow slowly, by only 0.14% annually until 2034. The increase in production will be mainly determined by the increase in yields, estimated to increase by 0.9% per year.
Despite the optimistic outlook, there are significant risks for the agricultural sector. According to European Commission data, by April, Romania managed to surpass France in wheat exports, thus dethroning the main exporter of the European Union.
