Bucharest, June 16, 2025RBJ – In 2024, Romania became the largest gas producer in the EU for the first time. The credit belongs to the state-owned company ROMGAZ, which increased its production after unprecedented investments.

One of the company’s strategic projects is the Caragele project. In 2024, production from Caragele was 22.48% higher than in 2023, thus becoming the second field in terms of share in Romgaz’s total production (6.6% of total Romgaz production), and in 2025 it will have a similar increase.

Almost 10 years ago, the National Natural Gas Company ROMGAZ S.A. announces the achievement of a new important hydrocarbon discovery on the territory of Romania in the RG.06 Muntenia Nord-Est Perimeter, where it carries out oil operations as the sole holder of the Concession Agreement for Exploration-Development-Exploitation, according to GD 23/2000 and GD 968/2011. The discovery is located in the northeastern sector of the Moesian Platform within the Caragele structural complex, approximately 35 km long, explored for geological objectives located at depths between 1500 and 5000 m, part of the company’s major exploration projects program. The production tests completed at two exploration wells, 55 Damianca and 77 Rosetti, confirm a significant accumulation of hydrocarbons in Jurassic limestone reservoirs over an interval of approximately 120 m located at a depth of over 4000 m. The results obtained from the flow tests (DST) on 7 mm and 9 mm nozzles predict daily production between 1400 and 2200 boe / well.
The contingent resource, evaluated based on the data obtained from the drilling, which includes well geophysics, mechanical cores and fluids extracted during the tests, but also from the sizing of the trap based on 3D seismic data, is estimated between 150 and 170 million boe.

The Caragele structure is in production and has a significant contribution to the cumulative extracted gas of ROMGAZ. The structure is in continuous development as the drilled wells prove its commercial nature. In order to evaluate the accumulations already discovered and to highlight new accumulations, SNGN ROMGAZ SA proposes to drill a number of 10 unconditional deep wells and at least 3 more drillings conditional on their results.

ROMGAZ, as part of its development strategy, has a solid portfolio of exploration projects that outlines current and future investments in the upstream onshore segment, integrates commercial opportunities and, at the same time, aligns with the objectives of the energy transition in a responsible and sustainable manner.

Today, June 16, 2025, the Minister of Energy, Sebastian Burduja, visited the drilling site of the 54 Damianca well in the presence of the management of SNGN ROMGAZ SA. The commitment to discovering new volumes of hydrocarbons is a priority of the SNGN ROMGAZ SA company, and the drilling of the 54 Damianca well in the deep zone of the Caragele structure is part of achieving this objective.

Well 54 Damianca, with a projected depth of 5100 m, is part of the portfolio of exploration wells aimed at identifying new hydrocarbon deposits, evaluating the productive potential and geological configuration in areas with depths of over 4000 m. The drilling of the well began in the first part of June 2025 and is progressing according to schedule.
In addition to the location of well 54 Damianca, the Minister of Energy and the ROMGAZ team also visited well 55 Damianca, which is in operation today.
