Ford Romania announces the production of 1 million EcoBoost 1.0-liter engines at the Craiova plant since its launch in 2012.
“The achievement of one million EcoBoost 1.0-liter engines manufactured at Ford Craiova is a great achievement for our plant and our employees,” said Ford President Ford of Romania and Ian Pearson, and Ford Craiova’s director. “The 1.0 liter EcoBoost engine has revolutionized our industry and we are very proud to build this engine in Craiova,” Pearson added.
The 1.0-liter Ford EcoBoost was first launched on the Ford Focus in 2012 and uses Ford EcoBoost technologies including direct high pressure injection, camshafts with variable geometry and turbocharger to fuel fuel efficiency, delivering power and the equivalent performance of a 1.6-liter aspirated engine.
The 1.0-liter gasoline Ford EcoBoost engine has been named “The International Engine of the Year” in the category “Best Engine Under One Liter” for six years in a row. Being a compact and powerful fuel-efficient engine, it has earned a total of 10 awards in the “International Engine of the Year” competition since its launch in 2012.
From the start of 2018, the compact and powerful Ford EcoBoost 1.0-liter engine is powered by innovative cylinder de-inactivation technology that helps reduce CO2 emissions and fuel efficiency, becoming the world’s first three-cylinder engine to offer deactivation technology for cylinders.
“Our engines built in Craiova are designed not only for the EcoSport model we manufacture in Romania, but also for other Ford factories in Germany, Spain, Turkey, Taiwan and Thailand,” added Josephine Payne, Manager, Engines, Ford Craiova.
At present, the Craiova Engine Factory employs over 1,000 employees, working in three shifts to meet market demand.
Since taking over the factory, in March 2008, Ford has invested approximately 1.5 billion euros in the production of cars and engines in its modern and advanced Craiova plant. Of this amount, more than 200 million euros were invested only in the Modernization of the Engine Factory.
The Ford Romania platform in Craiova has more than 4,600 employees working in the machinery and engine manufacturing departments. At the same time, the company announced that it will employ another 1,700 people this year to support the introduction of a second vehicle model in the Craiova plant.
