On Thursday morning, the start-up ceremony for the submarine pipeline within the Midia – MGD natural gas development project took place, an important moment for the exploitation of the offshore natural gas field.
The American company Black Sea Oil & Gas (BSOG) and the Petroleum Services Group (GSP), a company with fully Romanian capital, are involved in this project.
MGD represents the first natural gas project in the Romanian Black Sea area realized after 1989, having the capacity to cover, in the first phase, 10% of the gas needs in Romania.
Gabriel Comănescu, CEO of GSP, estimated that, in November, the production platform will be installed, and in December, the Uranus platform will enter the location for drilling. He said: “We estimate that the first gas in the Black Sea, exploited by BSOG, will enter the National Transport System in the middle of next year.”
The project is being developed by Black Sea Oil and Gas, part of the Carlyle Energy group. The investment amounts to about 400 million euros.
On the occasion of the event, Virgil Popescu, Minister of Economy, said that the exploitation of the Black Sea gas was, is and will be a priority: Romanians. Thus, Romania is taking an important step and making sure that it will be the first country to extract gas from the Black Sea ”.
