The springs of Borsec are located in the North-Eastern part of Romania, in the Borsec depression, Harghita county, in the heart of the Carpathian Mountains. The balneo-climatic resort of Borsec is located at an altitude of 900 m, the vast coniferous forest that surrounds it ensuring a beneficial microclimate.
There are more than 15 natural mineral water springs. The group of springs is connected to the Pliocene basin of Borsec. The mineralization of these types of waters depends on the dynamic activity of the waters. The presence of carbon dioxide, decisive in maintaining the chemical balance between the bicarbonate compounds of calcium, magnesium, sodium, is linked to the mofetic halo of the Harghita-Călimani chain.
It is said that in the 1800s bottling was only done on full moon days, when atmospheric pressure was at its maximum, to increase and retain the CO2 content of the mineral water.
The story of the “Borsec” mineral waters begins in the heart of Romania, where, neatly placed between mountains no taller than 1,000 meters, healthy springs flow without respite. Many, clear, swift and precious. The strands of history begin to intertwine in ancient times, at the time when the Romans had found peace in the Dacian lands. They must have been among the first “foreigners” to enjoy the clarity and qualities of Borsec mineral water. Roman coins dating from the 4th century, discovered all around the town that gave the world the water that bears its name, are proof.
The time point that marks the beginning of the industrial history of Borsec mineral water bottling is 1803. The year is linked to the story of the Viennese Valentin Gunther, who, drinking Borsec water, was miraculously cured of a disease considered incurable at the time. Amazed and seduced by its qualities, he aims to bottle the miracle and make it accessible to the whole world.
Three years later, in 1806, the industrial bottling of mineral water began in containers made from the land of Borsec.
In the first year, three million liters of bottled water found their purpose in the historical areas of Romania and in the surrounding regions.
The natural mineral waters of Borsec are bicarbonated, calcium, magnesium, sodium, hypotonic, non-ferrous, respectively with a very low iron content. This diversity of natural chemical constituents gives the water special healing qualities. They have a balanced mineral content, a low iron content and a high and stable concentration of natural CO2. All these characteristics position Borsec water as one of the best natural mineral waters.
