Romania has some of the best prices in the world for fixed internet subscriptions, with only four countries having lower rates, according to a study by cable.co.uk. According to the study, our country is in the top 5 countries with the cheapest fixed internet in the world.
The cheapest broadband in the world is in Sudan, with an average cost of $2.3 per month, followed by Kazakhstan ($5.11 per month), the Republic of Moldova, with $7.03 per month, and Belarus ($7.34 per month).
At the opposite end, the most expensive is in Burundi, where residents shell out $383.79 per month for broadband internet access.
The British company specializing in studying the telecom market shows, in its study, that Romania climbed three positions compared to the previous edition of the study, from the spring of last year, when it occupied the 8th place, with an average cost of 9 dollars. Thus, our country maintains its first position in the region.
“There are 14 qualified countries in the Eastern Europe region, all in the first half of the ranking, one of them (Romania) entering the top 10, and another 11 in the top 50. In general, the region has an average price of 19.22 USD per month, making it the second cheapest region in the world. The three cheapest countries are Romania ($7.57, 5th place), and Bulgaria ($12.71, 16th place). The three most expensive were Slovenia ($42.54, 98th place), the Czech Republic ($24.04, 51st place), and Montenegro ($23.41, 48th place),” the report said.
In Western Europe, the company compared the average price in 29 countries and concluded that the region is in the middle, towards the bottom of the ranking, with none of them in the top 50. The regional average price increased slightly from last year, at $50.87, making this region the seventh cheapest of the 13 global regions.
The cheapest monthly cost for fixed internet was in Italy ($28.69, 64th place), followed by Portugal ($31.67, 69th place). The most expensive prices are found in Norway ($87.36, 185th place), followed by the Faroe Islands ($83.59, 176th place) and Iceland ($78.04, 170th place).
“It’s no surprise that the most advanced and developed nations tend to have some of the most expensive broadband networks. After all, the earnings are higher and the investment and implementation of new technologies tend to be more advanced. Or so one might think. However, it is interesting that the cheapest broadband in the world tends to be found in Eastern Europe and the CIS nations. These countries tend to have some of the most advanced infrastructure (high percentage of full fiber FTTP coverage) and are somehow able to provide it to users at very low prices. In a way, this negates the idea that regions like Western Europe and North America pay more because of the cost of implementing new technologies, and actually more easily points to the idea that people in these countries are forced to pay more simply because they can,” Dan Howdle, senior analyst, commented on the study.
The United States is one of the most expensive developed Western nations, ranking 146th overall, with an average package cost of $59.99 per month.
North America fared worst overall, with all four countries in this region in the bottom half of the table and having the highest average package price for the entire region ($104.33).
Cable.co.uk collected and analyzed data from 3,703 bundled broadband deals in 219 countries between 2 January 2023 and 1 March 2023.
