Valer Blidar, the owner of Astra Vagoane Călători SA from Arad, one of the largest players of rolling stock, says that the factory will work at maximum capacity in the next two years as a result of the winning contracts. The company has more and more clients in Romania, Europe and other continents.
“I’ve been quiet now. If this month the factory works at 60% of the capacity, next month we will work at full capacity, even exceeding our capacity. We have contracted 62 trams by winning auctions in several cities in Romania.”
We still have wagon products for the Czech Republic as well. This year we will have an increase in turnover, we are dealing with all manufacturing preparation, approvals, but the top year will be 2020, “Valer Blidar said.
Last year, the company worked at a capacity of only 30%.
Since 2000, the company has delivered nearly 800 wagons. Most, almost half, came to CFR. The Romanian Railways have in heritage nearly 400 wagons made by Astra Călători. The other half reached international contracts in Brazil, Egypt, Iran, Italy and the Czech Republic. In Brazil, nearly 100, and in Egypt 200, and the company is now negotiating for a big contract in Tunisia.
In 2010, the company expanded to electric traction vehicles. Since then, trams have been started.
“We have a tram, the most economical tram in the world, with the floor low, silent,” confirms Valer Blidar.
The project for trolleybuses and buses started in 2014. The first trolleybus contract was won in 2015.
At the Astra Vagoane Călători factory in Arad, detached from the former Wagon Company Arad, the first gaskets for the Bucharest metro were made, and now passenger cars, trams and electric trolleys are produced, the company looking for contracts both on the domestic market and abroad.

In the production workshops are manufactured and tested the rail vehicles, as well as the carbodies, the bogies and a large number of components.
Currently, Astra Vagoane Calatori SA owns all capabilities to realize all types of 200 km/h passenger coaches for international UIC traffic, metros, trams, and maintenance services, reconstruction and modernization of passenger coaches, as well as turnkey solutions according to our clients’ needs.
