It is less than two years since lawyer Adrian Zuckerman was sent by Donald Trump as US ambassador to Bucharest. In a year and 10 months, Zuckerman managed to make the Romanian Government a doll that plays as the Trump administration sings.
The geopolitical conflict between the US and China is found in a mirror of what is happening in Bucharest. The US, through Ambassador Zuckerman, has pursued a heinous policy of subjecting the government and all Romanian institutions to American interests. This is most noticeable by eliminating large Chinese companies from the Romanian market.
First, it succeeded with Huawei, which will not have the right to participate in the auction that the Romanian state will organize for the implementation of 5G technology.
However, the elimination of the Chinese from the development of new nuclear capacities for electricity production is greater. Currently, Romania has two functional 700 MW reactors for electricity production. Two others were started, but unfinished, by the government of Nicolae Ceausescu. Work on reactors 3 and 4 swallowed more than $ 1 billion under the former communist regime, but after the fall of Ceausescu everything was abandoned due to lack of funding.
After much deliberation, Bucharest concluded a memorandum of cooperation and execution of works with China General Nuclear Power Corporation. The signing of the memorandum was to take place in June 2020.
Zuckerman’s intervention and the insistence of the US Embassy in Bucharest determined a 180-degree change in the decision of the Romanian authorities. The memorandum with the Chinese company was abrogated, with the hope that, in the near future, a new partner and financier of the construction of the two reactors will be identified.
And, miraculously, the partner was quickly identified. No one but the US. A Romanian government delegation, “led” by Ambassador Adrian Zuckerman, is currently in Washington to “strengthen” Romanian-American economic cooperation.
Like circus dolls, Romanian ministers carry out Zuckerman’s orders. The proof, that after the first day of the visit of the Romanian delegation, the one who gave details about the Romanian-American projects is none other than… Zuckerman. The main news: reactors 3 and 4 in Romania will be executed and financed by American companies and institutions.
Here is what Adrian Zuckerman says from Washington:
Romania will conclude an agreement with the USA regarding the investments regarding the Cernavoda nuclear power plant. The ambassador said that the Minister of Economy Virgil Popescu will meet on Friday with the Secretary of the Energy Department Brouillette to start an agreement on the US involvement in the construction of the reactors.
Adrian Zuckerman says it is an 8 billion euro project. In fact, Romania will benefit from the largest financing package ever received.
“Tomorrow, Minister Popescu will meet with the Secretary of the Brouillette Energy Department, to start an Intergovernmental Cooperation Agreement for the refurbishment of one of the two nuclear reactors and the renovation of the building where the two new reactors at the Cernavoda nuclear power plant are located, “This $ 8 billion project will be a paradigm for future Romanian-American economic and energy development projects,” said Adrian Zuckerman, according to the US Embassy in Romania.
In the second part of the day, Virgil Popescu will meet with the President of EXIM (Export-Import Bank of the USA), Kimberley Reed, in order to sign a memorandum of understanding aimed at financing the Cernavoda nuclear project and other projects in Romania. It is the largest financing package received so far by Romania, which indicates the trust that the United States has in their old partner and ally, the US ambassador also said.
What a shame for the Romanian nation that it is led by a government that has no power to lead the country’s development projects with its own thinking.
We have entered into a colonialist dependence to Uncle Sam, as our country has never been in its history.
